1977 - 1984 Study of Medicine at the Medical Department of the Catholic University in Namur and the Catholic University in Louvain/Brussels in Belgium.
1984 Licence of Physical Education for physicians at the University of Louvain in Belgium.
1984 - 2004 Institute of Sports and Preventive Medicine, Medical Department of the University of Saarland in Saarbruecken/Germany (substitute of the head of the department, Prof. W. Kindermann).
1987 German subspecialisation “Sports Medicine”
1994 Post-doctoral thesis (habilitation) at the Medical Department of the University of Saarland (title „The overtraining syndrome“).
1998 Offer of the chair of the Department of Sports Medicine at the University of Dortmund.

Internal sports medicine and exercise physiology, Performance diagnostics/training control, Cardiac adaptation to exercise and training/ Echocardiography, Overtraining, Hormonal regulation.

Scientific work:
Over 250 scientific publications including approx. 40 peer-review publications as first author. Scientific advisory board of the journals "Deutsche Zeitschrift für Sportmedizin“ (German Journal of Sports Medicine) and “Sportorthopädie-Sporttraumatologie“.1996-2000 Editorial board of „Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise“.
Editorial board of International Journal of Sports Physiology and Performance.
Corresponding member of the editorial board of the journal “Sportwissenschaft”.

Sports Medical Care:
Since 1988 Head-physician of the German Rowing Federation. Sportsmedical care of the Olympic training center in Saarbruecken. Member of the German medical team at the Olympic Games in 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004.
